In 1973 Stan and Bonnie Riegert began the dream of starting a business. With Stan's interest and skill with small engine repair and Bonnie's accounting skills, Prairie Lawn and Garden was formed. The first building site was a two car garage, rented from a local Eden Prairie businessman. Bonnie worked at the "shop" during the day while Stan did mechanic repairs in the evening after finishing at his "day" job. The business started by selling Homelite tractors and chainsaws , along with service and repairs. As business increased Stan left his "regular" job to focus on his company. Along with the growth in business all of the family members joined the staff...as mechanics, drivers, parts counter help and bookkeeping. As more manufacturers were added to the sales, it was time to "move" out of the garage. In 1975 Stan and Bonnie purchased the land for the current building, then worked for two years to obtain commercial zoning from the City of Eden Prairie. A contractor built the building in 1977, with Stan and the family completing the interior work. With a larger building more product lines were added such as John Deere, Ariens, Toro , Echo and Wright Stander. As time passed the staff was increased with grandchildren starting to work for the shop. Stan's hardwork earned him many awards including a feature in a National Lawn and Garden magazine and Eden Prairie Small Business Man of the Year. Stan and Bonnie continued their work with the business along with their many volunteer hours at their church and the Eden Prairie Fire Department. In 2010 Bonnie and Stan retired and left the day to day operations with Patty and Tom. On January 5, 2012 Patty and Tom officially purchased the business from their parents, continuing the family business and the legacy of Bonnie and Stan.
A family business can be a challenge. Hardwork, sweat and teamwork has brought about the 50th anniversary for the Riegert family business. We are grateful to the legacy our parents left us, along with all of the support from our dedicated customers.
We are thankful for these 50 years and look forward to the future!
